Players with the item in question can continue using it, but you cannot obtain this item anymore, outside of limited-time promotional sales.

Description

The Toxic Gunner is a ground tower that fires in bursts. It was unlocked by triumphing Trick or Threat Town as part of the Halloween 2020 Event. It was also obtainable through a gamepass for Robux 500 during the Solar Eclipse Event and for Robux 550 during the Black Friday 2023 sale.

The Toxic Gunner fires in bursts with a short delay between each burst. At Level 2, these shots gain the ability to slow down enemies. Each shot will make the target enemy temporarily slower by 4%, which can stack up to 20%. Only major bosses like the Patient Zero and the Void Reaver are immune to this, however they are not immune to its attacks. At Level 2+, it also applies poison to the enemy which deals 2 damage every 0.5 seconds for 6 seconds (10 second at Level 4). It can also decrease an enemy's defense at Level 2, decreasing it by 1% each poison tick. It can only decrease up to 50% of an enemy's defense. This tower does not have hidden detection, requiring the use of other towers to attack hidden enemies, like the Minigunner.

This is considered an all-round tower. Because of its cheap cost and decent DPS, it can be used as an early-game tower and even in mid-game. Late game, it is overshadowed by other towers in terms of DPS. However, the slowing effect and defense dropping allows the Toxic Gunner to have some use, even during the late game, as a support tower.

Strategy

  • Because of its cheap cost and high DPS for its cost, the Toxic Gunner is a viable early to mid-game tower.
    • The Toxic Gunner's ability to slow down most enemies and decrease their defense allows it to be an all-round tower.
    • However, the Toxic Gunner does not gain hidden detection at any level. For suitable hidden detection, other towers must be used, such as the Minigunner.
      • A Level 4+ Ace Pilot can help the Toxic Gunner by giving it hidden detection if the Toxic Gunner is in its secondary range.
      • The UAV can do the same but lasts 15 seconds longer, provides flying detection, and gives 30% more range. However, it can only be used 4 times, so you cannot solely rely on the UAV.
  • This tower can slow down enemies by 4% every shot at Levels 3-4, up to a maximum of 20%. Additionally, its slowness is unaffected by the enemies' size, unlike all the other slowing towers.
    • However, do note that the slowdown effect is temporary.
  • The Toxic Gunner's firerate can be boosted by the Commander, allowing more enemies to be affected by slowness.
    • The Toxic Gunner's cooldown cannot be boosted by the Commander.
    • However, this is not an issue at Level 4, as the Toxic Gunner has no burst cooldown at that Level.
  • The Toxic Gunner's defense dropping can be useful against enemies with defense, such as the Giant Boss, as it can decrease it quite quickly while slowing the enemy down.
    • When combined with other defense dropping towers, like the Pyromancer, it can remove all of the enemy's defense.
      • The defense dropping does not stack with the Jester's defense dropping.
  • It is recommended to have at least 3 Toxic Gunners with different target settings to slow down as many enemies as possible.
    • First ensures that fast enemies that dash in front of all other enemies are slowed down.
    • Strongest ensures that the strongest enemy is instantly slowed down.
    • Closest can help with slowing down enemies in the middle of a huge horde.
    • Random can split the slowdown, defense dropping and poison damage effects into large groups.
  • Combined with the Freezer, Jester and Electroshocker, this tower can cause some enemies to be essentially immobilized.
    • The slowing effect from the Toxic Gunner gives these towers more time to attack the enemies, increasing the duration of time that enemies are immobilized.
  • The Toxic Gunner is best paired with Accelerator since Toxic Gunner can slow down enemies, giving the Accelerator time to charge up.
    • Another good pairing is with slow fire-rate like the Ranger and low range towers like the Slasher, giving them more time to attack.
  • The Toxic Gunner can be used to defeat Lead enemies, as both its normal damage and poison damage can damage them.
    • This can make Toxic Gunner viable in Hardcore Mode, for late-game support and early game lead defense.

Trivia

  • The Toxic Gunner was supposed to be released during the Halloween 2020 Event, but it was postponed to the Frost Invasion Event due to it being unfinished.
    • The Toxic Gunner is the only event tower to be released after the event has concluded.
    • As a result, if you had beaten the Halloween 2020 Event before the 8th of May 2021 (when the Frost Invasion event released), you would have had to wait until then to obtain this tower.
  • Because of the separate cooldown and firerate values of the Toxic Gunner, the DPS of the tower varies over different periods of time.
  • The Toxic Gunner uses the same upgrade icons as the Soldier.
  • Due to a bug, this tower was able to slow down major bosses, like the Fallen King and Frost Spirit prior to the 4th of July 2021.
  • The Level 3 upgrade name, Sinister Gear may be a reference to Lord Sinister, the boss of the Halloween 2020 Event where Toxic Gunner was obtained.
  • The Level 4 upgrade name, Going Nuclear! is a reference to the Going Nuclear! soundtrack that plays in Polluted Wasteland II.
  • The Toxic Gunner had a defense dropping statistic since it was added, however, it was unused until the 24th of November 2023.
  • The Toxic Gunner is the only tower that cannot detect or indirectly hit Hidden enemies.
