The Haunted Past
MAP STORY

Event Content

The Haunted Past has been removed from the game as of the 21st of December 2023 as it was part of the Lunar Overture Event.
This page has been preserved for historical purposes.

Description[]

The Haunted Past was the event map for the second act of the Lunar Overture Event. Like other event maps, this map had a specialized wave structure with special enemies. Players started with a varying amount of cash, based on how many players there were in the match. In solo it was Cash (Gameplay Currency)$1,200, in duo it was Cash (Gameplay Currency)$1,100 and in trio it was Cash (Gameplay Currency)$900. If you were in the Paradoxum Games group, it was increased by Cash (Gameplay Currency)$100.

This map had the HP Locked modifier, which sets the base health to 100. It also had Mutation which increased the enemy health by 10% of their regular health. Both these modifiers increased rewards by 20%, which is a total increase of 40%.

This map had a unique system of giving players cash for killing or damaging enemies. You only got cash from them if they were killed, or in some cases, damaged by a specific amount of health. Additionally, the amount you got was a set amount of cash, which was not always equal to the enemy's health. In solo, you received 100% of the cash when an enemy is killed or you damaged it enough. With each additional player, this decreased by 25%, which means that in a trio, you only got 50% of the cash. This amount was distributed between players based on how much damage they dealt. However, if a player did not deal any damage, they would receive a percentage of the enemy's full cash upon its death or when it was damaged enough, which was 12.5% in duo and 16.7% in trio. If it was a decimal, it was rounded up. For example, the Scarecrow gave Cash (Gameplay Currency)$100 when killed in solo, Cash (Gameplay Currency)$75 in duo and Cash (Gameplay Currency)$50 in trio between the players that damaged it. Players that did not damage it received Cash (Gameplay Currency)$12.5 in duo, which was rounded up to Cash (Gameplay Currency)$13 and Cash (Gameplay Currency)$16.7 in trio, which was rounded up to Cash (Gameplay Currency)$17.

Design and Path[]

For both stages, the map was set in a large purple and yellow colored theater. Multiple lights and chandeliers could be seen on the walls or on the ceiling. It had multiple seats that were empty. The actual map took place in the middle of the theater, being separated from the audience by a large gap, with only small ropes with lines connecting them.

Stage One[]

The first stage was similar to Nightmare Carnival. The path started from a cave, immediately going down into a broken down stone gate-arch, which immediately crossed over onto a wood footbridge over a bright green lake. The path proceeded onto a stone walkway, making several short turns roughly in a circle, intersecting various lampposts and carnival tents. The path again crossed over the lake, approximating another wide circle, intersecting various lampposts, trees and tents. A tall orange tower could be found at the back of the map. Various dead trees, pumpkins, carnival banners and hills could have been found scattered over the map.

Stage Two[]

The second stage was similar to Trick or Threat Town. In the center of the map was a large hill with a statue in the center of it which provided valuable cliff space. The path began at a similar broken down stone gate-arch. The path had changed, with a small turn beginning the path before immediately doubling back to a longer stretch, circling around the center statue and another hill before making a few final turns to the exit. Various lampposts could be found around corners, with fallen trees and rocks decorating the landscape. A large cottage was found near the rear half of the map, and various hills and rockfaces stood out across the path. Various village houses and even a burial house could be found towards the side of the map, with the path terminating at a large communal structure.

Story[]

For more information, see The Haunted Past/Story.

Unlike A Dark Tale, The Haunted Past did not have much of a story. There was only one cutscene in the act, which played after Wave 9. In there, The Umbra makes three enemies, the Mummy, Demon and Scarecrow go towards a God Cube.

When Jack-o-Bot is destroyed at the end of the match, the Narrator says that The Umbra had been the one who sent Jack O' Bot to fight the player in Nightmare Carnival all those years ago.

Rewards[]

The game calculated how many Coin Coins and Experience EXP you receive based on how many waves were survived and if the match was won. During periods of 50% more Experience EXP (08:00 UTC Friday – 08:00 UTC Sunday), any Experience EXP earned was multiplied by 1.5x. The VIP gamepass also multiplies any Experience EXP earned by 1.25x.

Any reward that ends in a decimal point is rounded down, no matter the first figure of the leading decimal.

Rewards were calculated as:

Coins Reward EXP Reward
(Coin 500 ÷ (1 + [(20 ÷ Current Wave) - 1]^1.3) + Coin 100 (Triumph Only)) × 1.2 (Experience 80 EXP ÷ (1 + [(20 ÷ Current Wave) - 1])) × 1.2

It was possible to randomly get these accessories upon triumph of the second act:

Jack O' Bot Head Jack O' Bot Chestplate Reaper's Gear
Stock 30,000 15,000 3,000

Wave Structure[]

The formula for calculating wave bonus on each wave was:

(Cash (Gameplay Currency)$500 + (Waves Completed - 1) × Cash (Gameplay Currency)$150) × (1 - 0.1 × Players)

The wave clear bonus appeared when no damage was dealt to the base. In solos, it is one fourth of the wave bonus. In duo or higher, it is one fifth of the wave bonus.

The waves in The Haunted Past could not be skipped, though the cutscenes could be. They followed these timings:

Waves Wave Timer
1-8 1:00
9
10 2:00
11
12-14 2:00

16-17 2:00

Bolded names indicate an enemy type's debut.

Strategy[]

  • Early game towers with flying detection, like the Golden Soldier or Ace Pilot are highly recommended to deal both with the regular enemies and the Witches that spawn.
    • Later on, the Ranger and Pursuit can also work well against them.
  • Crowd control towers, like the Golden Pyromancer and Mortar are recommended due to the large number of enemies that spawn.
  • The Golden Scout is not effective due to the lack of DPS.
  • High DPS towers, such as the Ranger, Accelerator and Golden Minigunner are needed later on due to enemies like the Frankenstein having high amounts of health, especially with the Mutation modifier.
  • Towers such as Sledger and Electroshocker can be useful at stalling the large amounts of enemies during the second part of this map.
  • The Farm should not be brought as it does not generate any cash.
    • The Cowboy and Golden Cowboy also get their income reduced in this map, so it is not recommended to bring these towers.
  • The DJ Booth and Commander are highly recommended to support your towers.
  • After the first cutscene, all your towers are sold, so make sure you quickly place them back when Wave 10 starts.
