Description

The Shadow is a relatively high health enemy that cannot be attacked by towers without hidden detection. The Shadow is faster than the Abnormal and also has more health than it. Because of its relatively early debut and because it is hidden, it can quickly become a problem without adequate hidden detection.

The Shadow appears Sandbox exclusive, Golden and Legacy Fallen modes.

The Dark Necromancer can also spawn the Shadow. It also can be spawned by the Mystery.

Appearance

The current version of the Shadow has a translucent black body. It has a white slash across its face with two lines leaking from the right side of it. It also emits dark purple smoke from its torso.

The Enemies Beta version of the Shadow has a black translucent body, with its limbs, torso and head fading into a glowing purple. It also has glowing purple veins on its head and arms.

It will fade completely, then fade back into view at regular intervals.

The original version of the Shadow had a translucent black body. It was faceless and emitted purple smoke from its torso.

Strategy

  • Most early game towers gain hidden detection. Such towers are recommended to deal with early Shadows.
    • As Shadows spawn in hordes, the Golden Pyromancer is particularly useful, being able to damage multiple enemies at once and having hidden detection by default.
      • The Pyromancer can also be useful against Shadows, although it costs more and does not have hidden detection at base level.
    • Single target towers, like the Militant, Golden Soldier, Crook Boss or Warden, can also clear out groups of Shadows, although they will require more cash to successfully eliminate them.
    • The Minigunner and Accelerator are very strong options against Shadows, as lower levels have DPS relative to the Shadows' health.
      • Use of the Farm to get these towers is recommended.
      • Be wary of the Accelerator's long charge-up time, cooldown time and short overcharge, as it may allow some Shadows to leak without sufficient upgrades.
  • For splash damage towers that cannot target Shadows, such as the Mortar, if a Shadow is caught up in an explosion, they will be dealt splash damage.
    • This means that another detectable enemy must be near the Shadow for a splash damage tower to hit the Shadow.
    • While the Rocketeer has hidden detection, it should not be used early on due to its high upgrade and placement cost.
  • You can use the Frost Blaster, Freezer and Warden to slow this down, though it is not necessary.
    • You cannot use the Toxic Gunner as it does not have hidden detection.
    • The Sledger and Electroshocker, while not having hidden detection, can hit Shadows if another detectable enemy is near it, as they can hit multiple enemies, but this rarely occurs.
  • The Necromancer can be an useful counter to Shadows, as its skeletons have higher health than Shadows and has piercing to deal with hordes of them.
    • Additionally, most of its units have hidden detection, making them even more useful against Shadows.
  • Barricades can be quite effective against Shadows if you are unable to get any reliable hidden detecting towers in time as it can damage hidden enemies. Do be aware that it can only defeat eight Shadows before it breaks.
