Beginning of Wave 16 (Pre-Overhaul, Molten, Golden & Fallen)
Description
The Mystery is a fast, weak enemy that spawns another enemy upon its death. The enemy spawned depends on mode and wave, making the Mystery a potentially very dangerous enemy, especially if the player is unlucky and comes unprepared.
This appears in Hardcore mode, and in some Sandbox mode exclusive modes, these being Legacy Molten mode, Legacy Fallen mode and Golden mode. They also appeared in The Heights during the SFOTH Event.
The Mystery can be spawned by the Grave Digger (Hardcore only), Mystery Summoner, Summoner Boss, Necromancer Boss and Void Reaver. If the Enemies Beta modifier is active, these enemies will instead spawn the Breaker2.
The Mystery is replaced by the Breaker2 in any map with the Enemies Beta modifier active.
Appearance
The Mystery is a translucent glass green humanoid with a glowing orange question mark on its torso. It is faceless and small green question marks are emitted from its torso when it is killed.
The Enemies Beta version of the Mystery had a pastel light green skin color, with its torso and legs being a darker shade of green with a plaid stitch mark pattern on them. It also had a desaturated yellowish-orange question mark on its chest.
The third version of the Mystery is similar to the current version, except it had a drooling zombie face and did not emit green question marks upon death.
The second version of the Mystery is similar to the third version, except it was more translucent, and its skin color was a lighter shade of green. Its question mark did not glow either and had a vibrant orange color.
The first version of the Mystery is similar to the second version, except it was blue.
Enemy Spawned
The Mystery is able to spawn more enemies after its debut. Italic names can be spawned from the Mystery's debut.

Strategy
- The greatest danger mid-game Mysteries pose is the off chance that many high-health enemies spawn from a horde of them.
- Weaker enemies that spawn, like Abnormals, Quicks or Hefties, are easy to deal with by the time Mysteries debut and are not a cause for concern.
- Stronger enemies like the Lead Boss are the main threats when dealing with mid-game Mysteries; most defenses are only strong enough to deal with a few of them. As Mysteries are random with their spawns, spikes in enemy count and health are sudden and unforeseen and can easily overwhelm the defense.
- These moments are the worst-case scenario and do not always happen, though it is usually better to be prepared for such situations.
- Alternatively, you could play on maps with the Enemies Beta modifier active, which replaces the Mystery with the Breaker2, completely eliminating these possibilities.
- Due to the nature of mid-game Mysteries, lots of defense should be prepared to deal with the worst-case scenario.
- Fairly cheap high-DPS towers like the Minigunner are very useful.
- Strong mid-game towers like the Golden Crook Boss or Militant are effective, though weaker ones like the Scout may falter.
- As Mysteries and their spawns come in hordes, towers that can deal damage to multiple enemies like the Shotgunner, Pyromancer, Gladiator and Demoman are effective.
- The Military Base is quite good against Mysteries. The Tank and Railgun Tank are particularly effective with their high health and splash damage capabilities.
- Extra hidden defense should also be considered, especially if the past waves of Invisibles have proved troublesome.
- Later on in the game, Mysteries are able to spawn other enemies, some of which may be threatening.
- The Circuit from Hardcore mode is the most troublesome. It should be killed before it is able to speed up other enemies, which is usually doable with enough DPS. High-DPS towers like the Accelerator paired with support towers like the Commander should do the trick.
- Be aware that you do not earn any cash from damaging enemies that the Mystery spawns in every mode.
- The enemies that spawn from the Mystery do not need to be killed for wave progression to occur.
- If you are speedrunning a map, you should focus on killing the Mysteries first by setting your towers' targeting to Weakest before moving onto the enemies that spawn.
- The Frost Blaster, Sledger and Electroshocker are the best stalling towers against Mysteries as they can hit multiple enemies at once, though others like the Toxic Gunner are still viable.
- If there are some Mysteries at the end of the map, do not kill them, as they may spawn high-health enemies, severely reducing your base health or even killing you.

Trivia
- The Mystery, alongside its stronger counterpart, the Mystery Boss, have been slowly phases out of all modes and replaced by Breaker2 and Breaker4. They now only appear in Hardcore, if the map does not have Enemies Beta.
- Despite this, enemies like Mystery have not been fully phases out. Certain new events contained enemies which functioned similarly to Mysteries, these being the Enigma and Frost Mystery from Operation I.C.E Event.
- The appearance of the Mystery was originally based on the Mystery from Tower Battles.
- When the Super Mystery, Ultra Mystery and Uber Mystery were in the game, the Mystery was the only mystery enemy not to have glowing eyes.
- Prior to the Overhaul Update, in regular Fallen mode, the Mystery could spawn the Rusher, even though it is a Polluted Wasteland enemy and did not appear naturally in regular Fallen mode.
- The Mystery and Mystery Boss can learn to spawn new enemies even before its first wave appearance.
- The question mark on the Mystery is a re-textured version of the Question Mark accessory from the Roblox catalog.
- Prior to the Entity System Update, Mysteries summoned from the Summoner Boss could be stuck in the air.
- As the Mystery is always replaced by the Breaker2 with Enemies Beta active, it is currently impossible to see the Enemies Beta appearance of the Mystery.
- It was possible to see it on Polluted Wasteland II before the Halloween 2022 Update.
