"Here comes the gatekeeper!
What could they be hiding from us?"

Commander dialogue on Wave 20 (Cold Ambush)

Description

The Gatekeeper was a major boss that exclusively appeared in Cold Ambush as part of the Violent Night Event. It had a high amount of health and a slightly slow speed. Unlike most other enemies in Cold Ambush, it did not head to the exit, but instead walked around on the plots, similar to the Ripped Elf.

It had two abilities, the first one being Key Toss. This ability made the Gatekeeper throw its large key at the towers. The key would travel in a circular direction, stunning towers hit by it before returning back to the Gatekeeper. The second ability, Key Hurl, was similar to Key Toss. However, instead of directly attacking towers with the key, the Gatekeeper would attack the Christmas tree with it, dealing 140 damage to the base as well as stunning any tower hit by the key.

Appearance

The Gatekeeper had pale skin and large pointy ears. It wore a jester's uniform, with alternative red and green colors on its clothing, red pants and gloves, and a brown belt. It had a red and green four-way pointed hat on its head that drooped downward, with the bottom part of it being entirely made out of gold, which also had multiple red and green jewels attached to it. It wore a golden breastplate, pauldrons and shoes, as well as golden lining on its clothes and face. It wielded a very large gold key that it used to attack towers and the Christmas tree with.

Strategy

  • High DPS towers like the Accelerator, Ranger and Engineer are recommended against this enemy.
    • These towers should have their firerate and range boosted by the Commander and DJ Booth respectively.
    • The Ranger cannot be stunned by the Gatekeeper, nor can the Engineer's sentries be destroyed by it, making them both very effective.
  • The Medic can be used to cleanse the stuns from towers stunned by the Gatekeeper's abilities.
  • Try to have as much base health as possible so that you have a higher chance of surviving the Gatekeeper's Key Hurl.
    • Buying more plots increases your maximum base health and passive base health regeneration.
      • If you avoid skipping waves, they will pass more slowly, giving you more time to passively regenerate base health this way.
    • The Medic can be used to heal back additional base health if the passive regeneration is not enough.
  • As the Gatekeeper does not try to reach the base, and its abilities are not affected by stunning towers, trying to slow it down is nearly useless.
    • The Freezer, Frost Blaster and Sledger cannot slow the Gatekeeper down due to its freeze immunity.
    • The Toxic Gunner cannot slow the Gatekeeper down due to its poison immunity.
    • The Electroshocker and Warden are able to slow it down, but for a significantly lesser time due to the Gatekeeper's large size and the fact it is considered a major boss.
  • Defense dropping towers like the Pyromancer can be used to reduce the Gatekeeper's defense.

Trivia

  • This is the first major boss to ever have defense.
    • While Wox the Fox does have defense with the Lost Souls modifier, this is due to it increasing the defense of all enemies by 20%; it does not have defense naturally and it is not a change made specifically to it.
