Description

The Commando is a tower that could have been obtained through triumphing the Area 51 map in Normal+ mode as part of the Area 51 Event. It cannot be bought in the store. It could be bought for Robux 799 for a limited time.

The Commando fires lasers from its laser pistols. These lasers can pierce through enemies, dealing damage to two enemies at Level 0, increasing with Level to up to three. Additionally, the Commando not only fires in bursts, but also has a limited amount of ammunition. The Commando will fire in bursts, at Level 0 that being 3 with a set firerate between each shot. After a burst ends, a burst cooldown happens. For some reason, the burst cooldown is listed as the firerate in the tower's statistics box and upgrade descriptions. After it runs out of ammo, it will throw away its guns, which puts it into a reload animation. This takes more time than regular burst cooldown.

At Level 3, it gains a Missile ability. This ability allows it to fire out missiles on a spot selected by the player. The range missiles can be fired in is twice as large as the Commando's range. At Level 3, it fires out two missiles, though at Level 4 its increased to four. The ability has a cooldown, though unlike other abilities, each missile counts as a separate ability use. This means each ability cooldown only gives back one missiles, not all of them. If a missile hits an enemy, it will deal damage to them and stun them. As it deals Splash Damage, they will create an explosion that deals damage to enemies caught in it, also bypassing their defense. If a missile does not hit anything, it will stay on the ground and act as a landmine, though it will only remain there for a minute. These missiles can damage Lead, Flying and Hidden enemies.

The Commando has a placement limit of eight per player.

Strategy

  • The Commando should mostly be used as a mid to late game crowd control tower, as both regular gun and missiles have decent crowd control capabilities and it is quite expensive to upgrade.
    • The DJ Booth can be useful at reducing its upgrade cost, making it more affordable.
  • At earlier Levels, its only source of damage is through its guns.
    • As these pierce through enemies, having them placed in corners or near straight lines can allow it to maximize the number of enemies hit.
      • Additionally, changing its targeting can also help, making it hit as many of them possible.
    • Before Level 2, these guns can indirectly hit Hidden enemies if another detectable enemy is nearby, though this should not be relied on.
  • At Level 3, it gains its Missile ability, allowing it to send out missiles at a selected area.
    • As they can be targeted anywhere in its range, they can be quite useful at clearing out hordes of weaker enemies like the Fallen Hazmat, Breaker4 or Reaver, or to weaken stronger enemies like the Fallen Giant or Failed Experiment.
    • These missiles can bypass defense.
    • The area they can land in is not infinite, instead the missile range is double of the Commando's range.
      • Because of this, it can be used to kill any enemy that goes past its main range.
    • The missiles do not explode if they hit nothing, they instead stay on the ground until an enemy steps on them, possibly making them hit something later or allowing you to set them up for enemies in advance.
      • However, do note that after their lifespan ends, they will instantly explode, even if nothing stepped over them.
  • Do note that its missiles do not instantly get sent out to the selected spot, they take a few seconds to actually travel there.
    • Because of this, if targeting a singular enemy, it may be better to place them slightly in front of the enemy instead of directly at it.
  • The Commando gets hidden detection from Level 2, and not only that, its missiles can also hit Hidden enemies.
    • This makes the Commando quite effective against hordes of Hidden enemies.
    • However, it is relatively costly compared to other towers, so it should not be used for early game hidden enemies.
    • The missiles can also damage Flying enemies as well, making it more versatile.
  • The missiles fired out by the Commando stun enemies on hit, making it quite effective at stalling enemies.
    • As the missiles damage multiple enemies at once, its quite effective at stalling hordes of enemies.
  • The DJ Booth can be useful when combined with the Commando, as it has quite low range.
    • As its missile range is double of its regular range, this means its missile range is actually affected by range buffs.
  • As both its regular and missile damage are affected by damage buffs, towers like the DJ Booth or Mercenary Base can be useful with it.

Trivia

  • This was the second event tower added, after the Gladiator.
  • This tower is based on the Commando from Risk of Rain 2.
  • The Commando used to appear alongside the Commander on the "Triumph" screen before the Overhaul Update.
  • Before the 20th of November 2024, the Commando was the only event tower that was not available through a gamepass.
    • When it did receive a gamepass, it was put on sale with a cost of Robux 999,999,999 prior to the release of v1.42.0, which got later reduced to Robux 32,323,232 and then quickly taken offsale, making it the most expensive gamepass in the entire game.
  • The Level 5 upgrade description mentions that the Commando gains "Really Cool Armor", despite not being a statistical change.
    • This armor is stated to likely being stolen from Area 51.
      • The original default appearance actually reused some assets from enemies that appeared in that map, such as the old missile launcher being the same as the one used by the Raider Boss.
    • Before the Overhaul Update, it was called "Cool gold armor".
    • This was removed during the Hardcore Testing BETA; however, it was later re-added in the Overhaul Update.
  • The Level 4 upgrade name, "Death & Taxes", is a reference to a quote by Benjamin Franklin.
  • The Level 3 upgrade name, "Jericho Missiles", is likely a reference to the real Jericho missiles.
  • The old Level 2 upgrade name, "Disposable Missile", is a reference to the Disposable Missile Launcher equipment from Risk of Rain 2.
